FAQs

TIMED ROUTE

WHAT ARE THE RULES?

There are four rules: 1. You must write a new piece every day. 2. It must be complete. 3. It must fit the appropriate discipline (whether it's a play, a short story, a script, etc.). 4. It must be delivered by the 10am UK time deadline (not a second after 09:59:59).

WHAT HAPPENS IF I FAIL TO DELIVER ON TIME?

At exactly 10:00:00 GMT, the submission form will close and you will not be able to submit. If you did not click the submit button before, you will not be eligible for the financial reward. However, the challenge is to write every day, and you can still continue submitting the briefs and complete the challenge on the Simile Route. Our judgement on timekeeping is final.

WHAT IF I'M LATE JUST ONCE?

You will not be eligible for the financial reward, however you can (and will be encouraged to) complete the challenge by still submitting something every day on the Simile Route

EVEN IF I'M A MINUTE LATE?

Yes. Even if you're a second late! The form closes exactly at 10:00:00 and the submit button will not work after 09:59:59, even if you were on the page on time.

IF I MISSED THE DEADLINE, WILL I STILL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE?

Yes! Absoloutely! You can still keep receiving the writer briefs and play along to complete the challenge, but you will not be eligible for any financial reward.

CAN I WRITE ONE LONG PIECE THROUGHOUT THE CHALLENGE?

No. One new and complete piece of writing, every single day.

I DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO FINISH MY SUBMISSION, BUT THAT'S OK, RIGHT?

No. One complete piece of writing every single day.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I PUT IN THE POT?

In light of the effect the pandemic has had on our industry, we are now offering all our challenges on a ‘commit-what-you-can’ basis, this means you’re free to contribute as much (or as little) as you like. Our advice would be to contribute what feels right for you (i.e. enough to dangle as an exciting carrot but not too much that you can’t afford to lose it if you don't complete the challenge).

I DIDN'T PUT MONEY IN THE POT, BUT COMPLETED THE CHALLENGE, WILL I BE ELIGIBLE FOR A SHARE OF THE POT

No. The pot is only shared between people who have contributed to it.

WHAT IS THE £1.50 EXTRA FEE FOR PAYPAL/STRIPE

If you choose to add money to the pot, and you can only send money through PayPal/Stripe, a £1.50 handling fee will automatically be added and not go towards your contribution to the pot. If you don't want this to be added, we offer other forms that don't charge (such as bank transfers).

GENERAL

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The concept is simple. Every day throughout the duration of the challenge, you will receive a new brief to inspire you to write. Then, all you need to do is write something. At 10pm UK time, and every evening throughout the challenge, you will receive a brief, to help you along the way and get your creative juices flowing. The challenge is to write every day, and if you do that, you've completed the challenge, however, there are two routes to choose from: The Timed Route and the Simile Route

HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE?

As long as you can give it, be that ten minutes on your commute each day or eight-hour overnight sessions.

WHAT SHOULD I WRITE?

Anything you like. Our writer briefs are useful as starting points but are not rules to follow. This is about committing to writing something each day of the challenge. Do that and everyone is happy.

HOW LONG SHOULD MY SUBMISSIONS BE?

We don't care as long as you consider the work original and complete. It could be one page or a hundred. The choice is yours.

WHAT IF I DON'T LIKE THE BRIEF?

You don't have to respond to the brief, so if you don't like it - write about something else.

DO I HAVE TO BE IN THE UK AND/OR WRITE IN ENGLISH?

Not at all. Our writer-briefs know no borders. Do note that all timings and deadlines are UK time, and it’s your responsibility to adapt it to your time zone.

WHAT IF I WRITE BADLY?

We don’t care. In fact, we encourage you to write badly. If you’ve written something new and complete, then you're good. Well done.

WHAT SUPPORT DO I GET?

There's a whole community of people doing this with you, and we even have a forum. So go on the forum, on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and support each other. The team is incredibly busy during the challenge-period, but if you really need us, contact us through the chat or the Contact page.

WILL ANYBODY READ MY SUBMISSIONS?

We might, but chances are low. We do open all the files to spot-check and make sure all deliveries are kosher. If you write something you really don't want us to read - you will have the option of asking us not to read it - and we promise we won't! (although we will still spot-check the file).

CAN I SEE THE BRIEFS IN ADVANCE?

No. Seeing the daily briefs as they are published is the only way to be involved. Trust us. It's fun to wait.

WHO OWNS COPYRIGHT OF SUBMITTED WORK?

You do and you always will. We are not publishers and will not share your work without your say so or for profit. In fact, we delete everything once the challenge is over.

CAN I COPY/PASTE THE BRIEFS FOR MY BLOG, OR FORWARD TO MY FRIENDS/STUDENTS?

We're so happy that you're posting your writing on a blog. If you want the brief for context, we would ask that instead of copying/pasting them, you paraphrase them.

CAN I REGISTER A FRIEND?

Yes, you can register several people, but each person will need a seperate email address for registration.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TIMED ROUTE AND THE SIMILE ROUTE?

TIMED ROUTE - You will have 36 hours to respond to each brief. You must submit a new and complete piece every day before the deadline.

SIMILE ROUTE - It's like the Timed route, but you can submit as and when you wish. Perfect if you like the idea of the challenge, but not the stress of the deadlines.

HOW DOES THE MONEY SPLIT WORK?

* All contributions are placed into the final pot, from which 25% is taken to cover admin fees. * We first return the amount initially committed to each one who completed. * The remaining money in the pot is then divided between all completers based on a percentage basis (i.e. each person's contribution in relation to the final pot). Please Note: In the event that there is less money in the pot than the completers have put in, we will reduce it on the same percentage basis. For more details, read the Timed Route section.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE MONEY YOU KEEP?

At the moment, any money that we keep goes into helping us pay for our expenses. Our core team is still working without being paid, and we try to hire and support other writers to help us run the challenges. However, as we regard ourselves a social enterprise, if at any point in the future, we will make any profit, it will all go into the community, to develop more challenges, improve the website, hire more writers, and continue offering our challenges on a 'commit-what-you-can' basis.

10PM - 10AM - SO I ONLY HAVE 12 HOURS TO WRITE?

No! You have 36 hours! The briefs go out at 10PM (UK time) and you then have until the following-following 10AM to submit it.

SO I CAN'T COMPLETE THE CHALLENGE ON THE SIMILE ROUTE?

You certainly can! The challenge is to write evey day, if you succeed - you completed the challenge regardless of what route you're on.

WHAT DOES 'CONTRIBUTING TO THE POT' MEAN?

If you are on the Timed Route, you have the option of contributing to a communal pot. At the end of the challenge, the pot will be shared between all the people who contributed to the pot and completed the challenge on the Timed Route.

THE WEBSITE

IS REGSITERING FOR THE WEBSITE AND REGISTERING FOR THE CHALLENGE THE SAME?
